En kiellä, ettenkö olisi ollut yhä hämmentynyt. Virastotalon tapahtumasarja, jossa oli sentään kuollut ja haavoittunut ihmisiä, ei ainakaan ollut edistänyt sydänleikkauksesta toipumistani. Olin tehnyt sen minkä olin niissä olosuhteissa pystynyt, mutta semmoinen ei koskaan ole tarpeeksi, enkä minä siitä ainakaan enempää kehumista kaivannut. Ehkä en ollutkaan hämmentynyt, vaan pelkästään pettynyt, poliisiin, entiseen työpariini, ja sitä myöten itseeni. Miten minä olin ollut niin sokea, tai välinpitämätön? Ehkä oli hyvä lähteä hetkeksi muualle.

I don't deny that I might have been still confused. The series of events at the governmental office, in which people were killed and wounded anyway, didn't at least help me recover from the heart surgery. I had done what I could in the circumstances, but such a thing is never enough, and at least I didn't want more praise for it. Maybe I wasn't confused but simply disappointed with the police, with my former work partner, and even with myself. How had I been that blind or indifferent? Maybe it was good to go somewhere else for a while.
