Varpu remembered how he had stared at the spectacle, and he didn't still know whether the feeling was fear or what, but it had poked the innards in such a strange way that it had almost felt good. Noises were heard from the corridor, and Varpu was startled to stand. He pressed his cheek against the cold steel door. Another cell's door opened somewhere, authoritative words none of which was clear, then the click of a lock again, and complete silence again. Varpu started to bang on the door so that his palm hurt. Somebody come and get me out, he prayed, anywhere. He would die here. He didn't deserve the death penalty. He wasn't that bad.
