He had thought that he would die, and that then there would be nothing left. It had felt like a strangely comforting thought, and it hadn't included any fear at all, but only a slight curiosity. However, the fire department had rescued him because a neighbor had seen the smoke spurting from the mail slot to the stairway and called the emergency number. He had remembered all his life how strangely calm he was when death threatened him.
