Hän ei ollut mitenkään osannut valmistautua kuolemaan ja oli siksi kauhusta kankeana. Eivät ne kivut niin hirveitä olleet, kyllä hän ne kestäisi, jos vain saisi elää. Hän voisi elää vaikka tuskasta huutaen, jos morfiini toisi tunninkin helpotuksen vuorokaudessa. Tunti vuorokaudessa riittäisi. Kunhan vain saisi elää. Miksi hänen piti kuolla jo kuusikymppisenä, kun Suomessa oli paljon huonompiakin ihmisiä, kuten pakanoita ja rikollisia, jotka saivat elää jopa 90 vuotta tai yli?

He didn't know how to prepare himself for death in any way and was, therefore, numb with fear. Those pains weren't so awful, he would bear them if only he could live. He could live even if streaming with pain, if morphine brought even an hour of relief a day. An hour a day would be enough. If only he could live. Why did he already have to die in his sixties when there were a lot of worse people in Finland, like pagans and criminals, who were able to live for even 90 years or more?
