Rakastin Lauria, rakastin keittiötä ja rakastin kokonaista, ehjää elämääni. Jos mitään muuta tekemistä ei jostain syystä ollut eivätkä lapsetkaan kaivanneet äitiään, nappasin tiskialtaan päällä olevalta avohyllyltä yhden keittokirjoistani ja selailin sitä työtasolla ikkunan ääressä istuen etsien uusia ideoita arjen pieniin iloihin. Tein merkintöjä kirjojen sivuihin ja muuntelin reseptejä paremmin toimiviksi oman makuni mukaan. Ei meillä mitenkään erikoista ruokaa syöty. Ihan tavallinen lihakeittokin oli todella hyvää silloin kun sen maku kaikessa eleettömyydessään oli majesteetillinen, syvä ja kolmiulotteinen ja lisukkeet raikkaat ja maistuvat.

I loved Lauri, I loved the kitchen, and I loved my whole intact life. If there wasn't anything else to do for some reason and my kids didn't need their mom, I grabbed one of my cookbooks from the open shelf above the sink and browsed through it, sitting at the counter next to the window and looking for new ideas for the little joys of daily life. I made notes on the pages of the books and changed the recipes to work better with my own taste. For us, any special food wasn't eaten. Quite ordinary meat soup was really good when totally restrained, its taste was majestic, deep and three-dimensional and the side dishes were fresh and tasty.
