I can’t help but harp on the topic of AI. It occurred to me that there are way too many examples in history where technological revolutions really ruffled feathers.
I’ll skip the era when some smart person invented the wheel and fast-forward to the well-known Industrial Revolution, when machines took over manual labor and thousands of workers tore their hair out over the invention of specialized, “state-of-the-art” machinery at the time—aka the tractor. It’s hard to imagine that something so simple could have caused such resistance and disruption — but it really did. Everyone had no choice but to adapt.
Resounding upheavals also happened when the digital revolution took its first steps. Remember when personal computers and monitors took up so much room that they barely left space for a cup of coffee on your desk? Those were great times. But then we started pirating music and movies. Certain entertainment sectors were really affected, and they too tore their hair out. Musicians and singers pivoted, playing gigs galore. The ’80s and ’90s, for instance, were two great decades for Spanish music —it’s never been the same since the digital revolution. Everyone had no choice but to adapt.
