We are just mammals

I've already read a few books by Loretta Breuning and find her books not only fascinating but also therapeutic. Breuning has studied animals brains, especially mammal brains, that have helped her to understand the human brain because we are also mammals. We share the evolutionary path with other animals, and such evolutionary perspective of the human brain sheds light on many problems that we encounter in our life. Breuning says that she is also used to think that people are strange and some of their behavior doesn't make sense, but diving into mammalian brains helped her to understand the human nature as it is. We are mammals, and we are constantly seeking status because our mammalian brains strives to survive. We are constantly monitoring the environment for possible rewards and possible threats. Of course, we don't think so, but as Breunning humorously puts it, even among people who say that they are anti-status, a hierarchy will inevitably be built based on how anti-status everyone is and who is the most anti-status. Status seeking is directly connected with the happiness, because having a high status promotes releasing of feel-good chemicals such as serotonin, dopamine and oxytocin. Having a high status gives a mammal much more opportunities of having a lot of good food, social connections and mating partners. Thatswhy our brain is constantly seeking status, constantly comparing and constantly rivalling, because we are just mammals and have mammalian brains that along their evolutionary path have been making its best to survive and pass on genes.
