Trying something new and using the principles in this video to generate useful sentences for translation. The concept is 5 increasingly abstract categories, each with a statement, a yes/no question, and an open-ended question.
1. Things a person can hold in their hands: 一個紅蘋果
This is a crisp, red apple from the local market.
呢個係喺街市買嘅,又爽又紅嘅蘋果。
Is the apple sweet or sour? It's sweet.
個蘋果係甜定酸呀?係甜嘅。
What other fruits are usually this same colour? Cherries also are.
仲有咩生果通常都係呢隻色呀?車厘子都係。
2. Things a person cannot hold but can point at: 課室入面嘅鐘
The clock on the wall shows that it is exactly ten o'clock.
牆上嘅鐘顯示而家係十點正。
Can you see the second hand moving around the circle? Yes, I can see it clearly.
你睇唔睇到秒針喺度轉緊圈呀?我睇得好清楚。
Why is it important to have a clock in a classroom? So that the teacher knows how long until the class finishes.
點解課室入面有個鐘咁重要呀?因為老師要知道仲有幾耐先落課。
3. Things a person might do or might happen to a person: 打乞嗤
People often sneeze when there is dust in the air.
空氣有塵嘅時候,人通常會打乞嗤。
Do you usually say "Bless you" when someone sneezes? Yes, I do.
人哋打乞嗤嗰陣,你通常會唔會同佢講「大吉利是」呀?會呀。
What are some common reasons why people sneeze? Because they have a cold.
多數人點解會打乞嗤呀?因為感冒囉。
4. Things a person might remember happening: 生日派對
Last year, I had a large chocolate cake at my birthday party.
上年生日派對嗰陣,我食咗個好大嘅朱古力蛋糕。
Did you invite your friends to your last birthday celebration? Yes, I did.
你上次生日,有冇請朋友去慶祝呀?有呀。
What is your favourite memory from a past birthday? My parents bought me a new bike when I was 7 years old.
你以前生日入面,咩係你最鍾意嘅回憶呢?七歲嗰陣,我爸爸媽媽送咗一架新單車畀我。
5. Things a person might imagine happening: 火星旅行
Some people imagine that humans will live on Mars in the future.
有啲人想像將來人類會喺火星生活。
Would you want to go on a rocket ship to another planet? Yes, when it is safe to go.
你想唔想搭火箭去第二個行星呀?想呀,等安全啲先去囉。
What do you think a city on Mars would look like? I think the houses will be built in caves underground to protect the residents from the radiation.
你覺得火星上面嘅城市會係點樣㗎?我諗啲屋會起喺地底嘅山洞入面,噉樣可以避免居民受到輻射影響。
