The Camera Thief

Много лет назад я подрабатывал видеосъёмкой на свадьбах. Купил себе крутую на то время профессиональную камеру, в нашем маленьком городе я даже снимал свадьбу дочки мэра. В общем, камера хорошо меня кормила, даже ушёл с основной работы.

Years ago, I did some side work videotaping weddings. I bought myself a top-of-the-line (at the time) professional camera and even taped the mayor’s daughter’s wedding in our small town. That camera basically kept me fed to the point that I even quit my day job.

Однажды друг попросил снять его свадьбу за хорошую оплату. Я отработал, убрал камеру в гардероб, ушёл в туалет. Возвращаюсь, камеры нет. Понимаю, сам виноват, но я никак не ожидал такого поворота. Вора не нашёл. Друг всё по-человечески понял, я тогда не придал этому значения.

At one point, a friend offered me good money to shoot his wedding. When I finished doing my thing, I put the camera in a closet, went to use the bathroom, and when I went back for it, it was gone. I realize I was entirely to blame, but I just never expected something like that to happen. I never found the thief. My friend was a real trooper about the whole thing, which I didn’t read much into at the time.

Без камеры было первое время очень трудно, сидел без работы и денег, влез в долги, чтобы не потерять жильё, два месяца ел лук с макаронами, потом долгое время закрывал свою финансовую дыру.

At first, I had a hard time of it without my camera; I was jobless and broke, and had to go into debt to keep a roof over my head. For two months, I subsisted on pasta and onions, and it took me a long time to dig myself out of my financial hole.

И вот сейчас друг, по синей лавочке, признался, что камеру тогда утащила его сестра. Мол, ей тяжело было, нужны были деньги. И он всё знал. А я почти двадцать лет дружил с человеком, который меня так сильно подставил.

So recently, after a few drinks, that same friend decides to come clean and confesses that it was his sister who swiped my camera, claiming, and I quote, that she “was going through hard times and needed the money.” And he was privy to the whole thing! So I’ve been friends for almost twenty years with someone who screwed me over so royally.
