He couldn't understand the attempts of the rest of us to join as part of the nation or even humanity and its traditions, its knowledge and skills, to do what we thought we had to do, partly because we wanted to, partly because we couldn't imagine alternatives. Cwaniak couldn't understand that we needed to do so - and despised us for it. He despised the rest of my family, he despised the curtains drawn to the front of the window and what possibly happened behind them.
