My Husband Died Last Fall

Осенью умер муж.

I lost my husband last fall.

Пережила. Но встал вопрос с наследством.

I survived, but now there’s an issue with his estate.

У нас нет общих детей. У меня взрослый сын, давно за границей. У мужа две дочки. И как бы я его ни любила, меня всегда коробило его отношение к ним.

My husband and I had no children together; I have a grown son, but he’s been living abroad for some time now. However, my husband has two daughters, and as much as I loved him, his relationship with his daughters always set my teeth on edge;

Старшей — ничего, а младшей что угодно. Объяснял так, что старшая путная, сама справится, а младшая слабенькая, надо тянуть.

the younger one got everything handed to her on a silver platter, while the older one didn’t get squat from him. His reasoning was that the older one was clever enough to fend for herself, while the younger one was the weaker of the two and was always going to need someone to carry her.

Старшую в 21 год выставил из дома, как только получила диплом. Сейчас ей 29, замужем, работает, копят с мужем первый взнос.

He made the older one move out at 21 — as soon as she got her diploma. She’s now 29, married, working, and she and her husband are saving up towards a down payment on their first home.

Младшей 27, бросила три универа, выпивает, болтается по клубам, есть двое детей 7 и 5 лет от неизвестных отцов. Живут все трое в одну́шке, которую муж купил после рождения второго вну́ка и офо́рмил на себя. По завещанию эта квартира отошла мне.

The younger one is 27, she’s dropped out of three colleges, and enjoys drinking and clubbing. She has two kids, 5 and 7, and who the fathers are is anyone’s guess. All three of them are packed into a one-bedroom apartment her father bought after the birth of her second child. My husband kept it in his name and bequeathed it to me.

Муж решил, что младшей нельзя доверя́ть недви́жимость (были прецеденты, когда он дарил ей большие суммы денег, но она их спускала в лохотроны).

He had decided that his younger daughter wasn’t to be trusted with real estate (there’d been a few incidences where he’d gifted her substantial sums of money and she just blew it all in various get-rich-quick schemes.)

И у меня теперь огромное искушение подарить эту квартиру старшей. Мне просто кажется, что эта умная и дельная девушка гораздо больше заслужила такой подарок судьбы. Но муж хотел, чтобы там и дальше жила младшая.

Боюсь нарушить последнюю волю мужа, но и помогать идиотке не хочу.

As it stands, I’m seriously tempted to just give the apartment to the oldest daughter. I just think that a smart, practical girl like that is much more deserving to have a wonderful gift like this fall into her lap. But my husband’s wish was that his little princess would just continue living there. So now it’s like I don’t feel right going against my late husband’s dying wishes, but at the same time, it’s just not in me to help out a complete moron.
