Lumikki listened. She heard the steps which were approaching. She concentrated on remaining calm. If she now gave way to fear, it would be impossible for her to keep completely quiet. She closed her eyes and thought of the white, untouched blanket of snow. She imagined the blue twilight. She let the rabbit bound across the snowdrift so that beautiful, consistent tracks would be left on it. Two little circles in a row, then two elongated tracks side by side. The tracks soothed her.
