Because, even though Kuisma didn't say more, Krisse noticed too clearly what her grandmother had asked for and why she had asked Kuisma for this. Kuisma would never ask anything about Krisse's difficulty with food; he wouldn't want to listen to the explanations nor to know anything more. He just promised Helmi that Krisse would eat. And Krisse knew even without saying anything that Kuisma wouldn't give up. If he had promised something to her grandmother, he would keep it. Her grandmother's will was steel, even after her death.
