Keittiön pöydällä on vihkoja ja niissä lyijykynällä kirjoittamiani muistiinpanoja. Yhdessä vihossa on hyvin lyhyt tarina ja kahvin juotuani ryhdyn työstämään sitä kirjoituskoneella. Ennätän kirjoittamaan sitä noin kaksi ja puoli riviä, kun ovikello soi ja keskeyttää aherrukseni. Kuulen kuinka avain kiertyy ulko-oven lukossa ja joku tömistelee tuulikaappiin. Olen kai illalla kotiin tullessa unohtanut avaimen lukkoon. Kuuntelen hetken valppaana, kirjoitan sitten kuitenkin kolmannen rivin loppuun, punnerran itseni ylös tuolista ja kömmin tutkimaan ken tulija lienee.

There are notebooks on the kitchen table, and there are notes in them that I wrote with a pencil. There's a very short story in one notebook, and after drinking coffee, I start to work on it with the typewriter. I manage to write two and a half lines when the doorbell rings, interrupting my labour. I hear the key turning in the lock of the exterior door and somebody stamping in the entrance room. I've probably left the key in the lock entering home in the evening. I listen for a while, alert, but then, finish writing the third line, push myself up from the chair and crawl to see who the comer is.
