Hän oli kääntynyt aamutakkinaisen perään, nainen oli jäänyt seisomaan isontien risteykseen ja vahtasi yhä olematonta kelloa, nyt se näytti siltä kuin olisi odottanut jotakuta, joka oli pahasti myöhässä. Ohittaessaan naista hänelle oli tullut hassu ajatus mieleen: nainen itse oli myöhässä koko elämästä, siitä tiepuolesta se ei ehtisi enää mihinkään. Ja sitä ajatusta seurasi toinen, tylympi ja vielä alakuloisempi, eikä se koskettanut enää pelkästään naista, vaan häntä itseäänkin: oliko niin väliä ehtiäkään?

He had turned to the woman in her dressing gown, the woman had remained to stand at the crossing of the big road, still staring at the nonexistent clock, now she looked as if she had waited for somebody who was badly late. As he passed the woman, a funny thought had come to his mind: the woman herself was late for the whole life, from that side of the road she would no longer make it anywhere. And that thought was followed by another, ruder and even more melancholic; it no longer concerned only the woman, but himself: did it matter so much to be on time?
