Tinka avasi vastahakoisesti oven ja kiirehti sytyttämään valot. Valot joka paikkaan, ennen takin ja ulkokenkien riisumista, niin hän aina teki, jos joutui tulemaan tyhjään taloon. Hän ei mielellään myöntänyt edes itselleen, että hän pelkäsi. Ei olisi ollut varaakaan pelätä, eihän äiti voinut aina olla kotona, sillä oli vuorotyö, yövuorojakin. Mutta talo naksahteli, humisi ja eli inhottavasti.

Tinka opened the door reluctantly and hurried to turn on the lights. The lights everywhere, before taking off the coat and shoes, as she always did if she had to come to an empty house. She didn't even like to admit to herself that she was afraid. She couldn't afford to be afraid, her mother couldn't always be home because she was on the shift, the night shift. But the house creaked, hummed and was disgusting.
