Mikael tiesi pärjäävänsä ilman happea kauemmin kuin ihminen pärjäsi, mutta siitäkin huolimatta hänen olonsa muuttui tukalaksi. Happi tuntui elinehdolta, ja silloin kun se väheni, tuntui koko elämä hupenevan.

Mikael knew that he would be okay without oxygen longer than a human being, but despite that, he came to feel uncomfortable. Oxygen felt like a necessity for life, and when it decreased, it seemed that the whole life was diminishing.

The sun was thin, a shimmering streak of light on the horizon. Amir had followed the sun for the last ten minutes. Looking at the sun was painful, but you could bear the pain when you knew that it would end soon and that it wouldn't lead to permanent injuries or death. All his life, long like eternity, Amir had tried to learn to get along with the sun.
