Tohtorin mukaan hänen päänsä oli saanut kovan kolauksen ja kestäisi kenties hyvän aikaa , että kaikki sen sisällä ehtisi taas järjestyä oikeille paikoilleen. Lievää sekavuutta ja painajaisunia oli odotettavissa.  Wiktor käytti tätäkin hyväkseen. Hän ei tiennyt, miten selittäisi öisen seikkailunsa niin, että äiti ymmärtäisi. Hän ei tahtonut ymmärtää itsekään, miksi oli lähtenyt seuraamaan pudonnutta tähteä,  ja miten kaikki sen jälkeen tapahtunut oli ylipäänsä mahdollista. Omia silmiään hän ei epäillyt, mutta hänen ymmärryksensä ei riittänyt näkemänsä selittämiseen.

According to the doctor, his head had got a hard blow and it would possibly take much time for everything inside it to settle back into the right place. A mild confusion and nightmare were to be expected. Wiktor took advantage of this. He didn't know how to explain the nocturnal adventure so that his mother would understand. He didn't want to understand himself why he had gone to follow the fallen star and how everything that had happened after that was possible at all. He didn't doubt his eyes, but his understanding wasn't enough to explain what he had seen.
