Jingdezhen in China is known for porcelain, and about 400km further south, there is another porcelain town called Swatow.
Swatow wear originated there, and was mainly exported to Japan from the late Momoyama era to the early Edo era (about 1600). Since then, it has been adopted into Japan and still kept producing. In Japan, this style is known as gosuakae.
I learned this style from my porcelain painting teacher in Kyoto. I enjoyed drawing red lines freely to try to show the feature of gosuakae. If you sense the harmony of the vibrant colors and the free, flowing lines on my plate, I'll be very happy.
