Keiju oli kahlannut pahojen päivien läpi siihen, eikä hänellä ollut aavistuskaan, kuinka monta samanlaista surkeuden, pelon ja nälän päivää hän joutuisi vielä kokemaan, mutta sen hän tiesi, että tulisi kaikesta huolimatta selviämään.

She hadn't believed that anybody would mourn her. She had been invisible to others. But now she was sitting with those people for the last time, and yet it felt somehow sad. Keiju didn't understand herself. Outside, winter had given way to spring, the earth was already green, and the sky was blue. Keiju had gone through bad days, and she had no idea how many same days of misery, fear and hunger she would still have to experience, but she knew that she would survive after all.
