Kaksi tuntia myöhemmin Paavo kiirehti linja-autoasemalle. Kello oli yli neljä ja kadut täyttyivät kotiin palaavista työntekijöistä. Askel oli kiireinen jokaisella; kaupunki muutti ihmisen askelen. Paljon oli muuttunut siitä kun Paavo oli kolmikymmenluvun alussa asunut Tampereella, mutta vaikka liikenne silloin oli toista, kaupunkilaisten askel oli ollut samanlainen, kärkäs.

Two hours later, Paavo hurried to the bus station. It was past four, and the streets were filled with workers going back home. Everybody had a hurried step; the city changed people's steps. Much had changed since Paavo lived in Tampere early in the 1930s, but even though the traffic was different then, the step of the people in the city had been the same; quick.
