I visit my parents house in Shiga Prefecture once a week, and today I went there with my husband by car because I wanted to bring some heavy items like flower pots and soil for roses .
I cleaned their house and yard, did shopping for them, replanted some roses into larger pots and so on. I did everything quick because it looked like it was about to rain. Because of that, the humidity was really high.
On the way home, we had terrible rain. We call this kind of sudden, super heavy rain a guerrilla rainstorm. Due to climate change, recently we've had these rainstorms more often than before.
Since I wanted to share how terrible it was, I took several photos.
The rain suddenly started and turned heavily so quick that it was hard to see the front.
You can see water pooling here and there in the picture below.
My husband and I were driving through Kyoto City on our way to Osaka. The rain made a instant river on the side of the road so quick.
While driving, we heard the news said we were warned floods, so every time we crossed rivers, we checked the water levels. It felt like the storm was chasing us. When we finally reached Osaka, we saw a dry road for the first time. I was really grateful that my husband drove me. If I had gone alone, I would've definitely had the terrible storm and gotten completely soaked.

Wow, the rainy season in Japan doesn't mess around--it's serious!
Thank you for the comment. Actually, the rainy season has been over. It's a storm called ゲリラ豪雨. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guerrilla_rainstorm
This reminds me of a storm my mom and I got stuck in last weekend! We were driving along the highway when the rain got so heavy it was hard to see. We pulled over just as hail started pelting our windshield! Luckily we were okay, and no trees went down during the storm.
@Shauna The storm sounds very scary. I'm glad you and your mom were saved. My Texan friend told me that hail sometimes fall too. Yours sounds much worse than ours.
@yumiyumayume thank you. We've been having a lot of scary storms lately! :(
I hope your Texan friend has been okay through the hail!
@Shauna Oh, stay safe! My Texan friend has shared a terrible flood where I once visited for porcelain painting with two of my American friends a couple of years ago. It was too too bad....
@yumiyumayume oh geeze, that's very scary! :(
@Shauna Oh, yes.
