I tried sushi for the first time last year. It was when my Swiss family and their Swiss guest brought me the leftover of sushi that they had in a restaurant in Hurghada. And I liked it.
Last month, the same Swiss guest visited Safaga again and she invited the Swiss family and me for dinner in the same sushi restaurant. The restaurant had some Japanese-style. The atmosphere was quiet and nice.
The Swiss guest showed me how to use the chopsticks but I didn't want to make a mess in the restaurant and followed the familiar/ easier way to me. I preferred eating sushi the Egyptian way, with my hands. I could control my long fingers better than chopsticks.
Upon our departure, the Swiss guest went to pay and got a discount as it was the fifth anniversary of the restaurant.
There were some leftovers which I took away and had them on the following day.
I noticed that all the restaurant staff were Egyptian. In one of Yumi's latest posts, she talked about different kinds of sushi. I had no idea what kind of sushi we got. Yumi even mentioned that a kind of wine is used for making sushi! I doubt that wine is used in Egypt's restaurants since alcohol is forbidden. Nevertheless, I believe some high-class restaurants can break the rule.
In general, I like fish and seafood. There are still many different seafoods that I haven't tried yet.
As I come from Luxor, a city on the Nile, Nile tilapia was the only kind of fish we used to have.
During Sham el-Nessim (spring festivals), we used to have Fasikh, a kind of salted fish. I don't like Faseekh, and prefer salted smoked herring, which I only tried at a later stage of my life.
Only when I traveled to Hurghada, I manage to try shrimps, calamari and other kinds of seafood for the first time in my life.
And it was in Hurghada as well when I cooked shrimps for the first time.
Hmm, now, after writing about all that, I crave having some herring and shrimps. I will go to bed, maybe I can have them in a dream.
Have a good night!
While writing my comment, I'm thinking of you: You are probably eating sushi in your dream:) I'm really happy that your sushi experience turned great! We have lots of different types of it, and I hope you'll try them.
Did you eat sushi with wasabi (spicy green staff) and say sauce.?Say sauce is fermented and contains a little bit alcohol. I've heard that in Dubai, say sauce has been banned. How about your country?
Anyway, sleep tight, ZZ!
Ah, I forgot to mention wasabi. Yes, I tried it and it was so hot to me. :D
There were some kinds of soy sauces but I think they didn't contain alcohol.
Thank you, Yumi! Have a lovely Tanabata day! :)
I guess you have your own sauce which tastes similar like say sauce or other sauces. Thank you for sharing!
