Voin hyvin kuvitella mielessäni ihmisen ilman käsiä, jalkoja ja päätä. Vain kokemus on meille opettanut, että pää on tärkeämpi kuin jalat. Mutta en voi kuvitella mielessäni ihmistä, jolla ei ole järkeä. Sellainen olento olisi vain kivi tai pelkkä luontokappale. Järki on siis sellainen seikka, joka kuuluu ihmisen olemuksen määritelmään ja jota ilman häntä ei voi mielessään kuvitella. Mikä meissä tuntee iloa? Onko se ehkä käsi? Onko se käsivarsi? Onko se liha? Onko se veri? Nähtävästi täytyy sen olla jotakin aineetonta.

I can imagine well in my mind a person without hands, feet and a head. Just experience has taught us that the head is more important than the feet. But I can't imagine in my mind a person without reason. Such a being would be just a stone or mere piece of nature. So, reason is a thing which is part of the definition of the human essence, and you can't imagine the person without it. How can we feel joy? Probably with the hand? With the arm? With flesh? With blood? Apparently, it must be something intangible.
