Today I read an article about whales. Whales have been seen to help other whales who were entangled in fishing gear. One juvenile whose fins were wrapped in fishing line was helped by an adult who flapped with her fins, trying to show the juvenile what to do. At first the juvenile didn't get it, but then he caught on. Another whale spent five hours beside the trapped whale and protected her from predators. He also tried to show her his compassion by spending the last hours of her life with her. Researchers said that this type of behavior has been observed by whales since the start of whaling. At those times the trapped whales were seen to be accompanied by other whales. Some of them tried to lift the trapped whales up in order to help them to breathe. Fortunately, the whaling was banned in most countries. However, whales continue to be in danger because of fishing entanglement.
