Australian Cockatoos

by

Today I've read an article about a type of Australian cockatoo that seems to be very intelligent and adaptable. These cockatoos have learned to twist a knob of a water fountain. A researcher observed quite a few of the cockatoos lining up and twisting a knob of the water fountain in a park in order to drink water. That's not a single type of pretty intelligent behavior that cockatoos have demonstrated. They were observed to open garbage bins. At the first sight it seems to be not such difficult feats but when you take into account that cockatoos are not properly attired to do such things. They have just talons and don't have thumbs. Researchers say that animals who demonstrate such innovative behavior have more neurons in their cortex, which is the case by cockatoos. They have more neurons in the cortex than monkeys.
