Rose Island is an Italian movie (original title: L'incredibile storia dell'Isola delle Rose) released by Netflix in 2020. It tells the story of an Italian engineering, who in the late 1960's decided to build a platform on international waters, about a half mile from the Italian cost. He used a small boat to transport floating metal cylinders designed to be the pillars of the structure - fixed in the ocean floor. After that, he built a surface of concrete on top of the structure, which was the base for his island.

To obtain drinking water, he used a drilling rig with a pump to extract freshwater from beneath the ocean floor. The drilling rig, which looks like a tower, caught the police's attention - they thought it was a pirate radio station - but when they saw it wasn't a radio tower, they didn't care.

As the construction of the island advanced, they started to host parties that attracted visitors from multiples countries. The island made the news in the whole world, which didn't make the Italian government happy. Then, the Italian guy tried to make the island a autonomous country, with Esperanto being the official language. Before he even got a chance to defend his case to Europeans authorities, the Italian government sent the police to evacuate the island - and then blew it up.

I found this true story extremally interesting, and the movie was very well made - great directing, great acting, the island created was pretty good as well.

I also read an small Italian book about this case (L'Isola delle Rose: Un sogno lungo una stagione by Giacinto Cerviere), which was pretty helpful to understand what was real and what was fiction in the movie.
