Spanish Sweet, Torrijas

Last week, one of the Japanese learners here posted a journal entry about a Spanish sweet called torrijas. Since it sounded delicious, I made it today. Here is my version of the recipe.

Ingredients:

One baguette

Two tablespoons of brown sugar

500ml of milk

Cinnamon powder

Maple syrup

Olive oil

3 eggs

Preparation:

Slice the baguette into several pieces.

Make the mixture with the brown sugar, some cinnamon powder and the milk in a shallow bowl.

Instructions:

Soak the bread slices in the milk mixture and leave them overnight in the fridge.

The picture below shows the result the next morning. Each slice has completely soaked the mixture.

Beat the eggs in a shallow bowl until they're well combined. Dip each slice of bread into the egg, so both sides are coated.

Fry each slice in olive oil until it turns golden brown. That's it!

Instead, I used my air fryer because I can make slightly healthier version.

I placed the slices on the tray of my air fryer.

I set the fryer at 200℃ for 16 minutes and let them cook. I didn't deep-fry them, but they still looked delicious.

I had two slices of my homemade torrijas with maple syrup. The cinnamon aroma was so mouthwatering!

The inside of the torrijas was soft and juicy, while the outside was nice and crispy. The contrast in textures was amazing.

It's said that in Spain, people have this sweet during Easter.

It was my first time making them, so I used only cinnamon as a spice, but I think we can add cardamon, star anise or cocoa powder. If you like wine, you can replace the milk with it. Next time, I'd love to add more spices.

Give it a try and enjoy your own version of torrijas!
