A couple weeks ago, my husband and I invited my parents, and the four of us went to a crab restaurant. Since crab season is nearly ending, we made sure to enjoy it while we could.
Last time we invited our daughter and her family too, but since our grandson has been getting more energetic lately, we decided not to invite them this time.
We felt a little bit guilty, but it allowed us to have a more relaxed meal.
The picture below shows chawanmushi. Making such a smooth and silky one like this is quite challenging for me. I need to practice more.
The picture below shows ingredients for kani-shabu nabe. Kani-shabu is a similar idea as shabu-shabu.
The picture below shows the nabe (pot with broth). You place vegetables from the previous picture into the pot and let them cook. While they're boiling, you lightly blanch the crab raw meat into the broth by holding the edge of the shell with your hand and dipping it into the broth.
The next picture shows grilled crab.
We also had crab tempura.
The picture below shows crab sushi.
The soup contained crab meat, yuba (tofu skin) and three different colored pieces of fu (Japanese wheat gluten).
The last picture shows dessert, a strawberry mousse.
I was really happy to see my parents enjoy the meal. Since they want to see cherry blossoms with us, we're planning on taking them somewhere nice.

私はぜんぜんエビを食べないんですけど、蓮根の天ぷらが美味しそうです!衣がサクサクしてそう。蓮根はシャキシャキしてそう。😋
私はエビよりむしろあんまりカニ好きじゃないんですけど、なぜか家族の寄り合いにはカニ料理が多くw、お付き合いさせられています。私以外皆カニ好きなもので。
レンコン、サクサクで確かに美味しかったです。私は天ぷらだとレンコン、茄子、ちくわが一番好きかも~。
あ、すみません。エビとカニって書くつもりがエビだけになっちゃいましたね。わたし、エビカニ食べないんですよ。あと、ウニも食べないんです。食べようと思ったら食べられますけど。やっぱ野菜ですよ!ちくわの天ぷらも茄子の天ぷらもおいしいですよね。あと、ごぼうも大好き!
That meal looks delicious, and it's presented so beautifully! My wife and I are adventurous eaters, but our kids are less so, so I'm a little hesitant to take them to a place as nice as this. Maybe we should follow your example and take our next trip to Japan without the kids ;)
@Aki さん、エビ、カニ、ウニも食べないんですね。ウニは大好物です!ゴボウはエビや玉葱とのかき揚げにしたら美味しいけど、あきさんは、ゴボウだけの天ぷらで召し上がるのかな?それもきっと美味しいのでしょうね。今度やってみよう!
@Ersatzjello Haha, poor your kids! They'll be definitely upset you! In the Gion area (close to Teramachi), Kyoto, there is a good crab restaurant called "かに家” and you'll love it!
ゴボウをささがきにしてかき揚げにしたものが好きです。ゴボウだけも美味しいですけど、繊維質がすごいですよね。噛みちぎるのが面倒くさいので、ささがきゴボウが好きです :D
@Aki_ さん。 ゴボウだけのかき揚げにするのですね。とっても美味しそうです。ゴボウは、煮物に入れてもかやくご飯に入れてもたたきゴボウにしてもゴボウのサラダにしてもきんぴらにしても美味しいよね。大好きです。
