A couple weeks ago, I received my order, which was a Christmas rose. I had always thought Christmas roses were too simple and boring, so I never thought I would want one. However, recently I've noticed there are many different varieties, and some of them bloom lovely looking flowers. They are precious flowers that bloom in winter. Since my garden is boring in winter, I decided to add one to my garden.
When I opened the cardboard box, a delicate flower appeared. It looked so cute that I immediately fell in love with it.
Since I was curious about the name, "Christmas rose", I looked it up online. I learned that their roots are poisonous, and in ancient times, people tipped it on the surface of arrows. These poisonous arrows were used for hunting animals or as weapons in battle. Interestingly, it's said that Alexander the Great was killed by this poison. On the other hand, the toxic roots were also used as medicines, particularly for treating mental illness.
They may look simple, but I found it's fascinating that such an unassuming flower holds enough power to kill someone as famous as Alexander the Great.

I had never heard of this rose variety before. It sounds very interesting! Thanks for sharing this bit of history.
You are welcome, and thank you for reading, correcting and commenting on my post too!
These are one of my favourite flowers, mainly because I've have lots of success pressing them. In my mum's garden there are some with green and pink coloured petals.
@via-chan Thank you for the comment. I'm sure your creation turned pretty! Your mom's garden must be beautiful!
