Based on my teaching experience, I will briefly write down some characteristics of successful language learners.
- Having a relaxed attitude about learning
- Feeling a little nervous when conversing with native speakers
It is normal to feel nervous in conversation, but try to relax when studying alone.
- Being aware of the usage of words and expressions
- Recognising the importance of grammar and pronunciation
Those help in choosing the right words for different contexts, and they are key to effective communication.
- Maintaining a good balance between the learning zone and the performance zone
- Being able to learn from their mistakes and striving to improve
It is always important to reflect on learning.
- Being open-minded
Embraces new ideas :)
I've been lazy about my English learning lately, but having lessons with good students reminded me of the positive attitude I need.

I totally agree!
Thank you, Yumi-san 🙂
I'd add that one has to be ready to put in a great deal of time and effort. I knew language learners who could communicate orally enough to get along but couldn't even read or write. They just weren't ready to put in the extra work. In some cases they didn't even care much for grammar as long as people understood them. I think this worked for them in Israel where everyone knows people are learning the language but wouldn't go over well in France where they are particular about their language.
Hi David-san. Thank you for pointing out that important point. I've had some students who refused to learn grammar. I'm sure they can manage with their conversational skills in Japan, but I guess many Japanese people would struggle to fully understand them and simply say, "Oh, your Japanese is great!" Interestingly, in my experience, learners who wouldn't learn grammar also tend to show little interest in improving their pronunciation. Learning French sounds like a big challenge!
