I work for a web design company and we always need images to put on websites. Until 2022, we took photos ourselves or purchased photos from stock photo libraries. However, since last year, we've been using AI-generated images quite often. I'm not a designer but a coder, so I won't argue my point of view on this matter, but to be honest, I don't see why my coworkers believe AI-generated images are good enough for our purposes. I detect something eerie in those images. They remind me of the uncanny valley. As you might know, the uncanny valley refers to our feeling of eeriness towards robots that look almost, but not quite, human. AI-generated images aren't robots, yet I don't like them because they're almost real but certainly fake.
Furthermore, I'm sad that lots of photographers and models might lose their employment. Things are becoming more difficult, and we coders may not be immune either.
I know what you mean. I'd never heard the term uncanny valley but it definitely exists. In my last post, I used an AI image of myself, and although it is uncannily realistic, there's something there that isn't me and it's indeed eerie.
@CocoPop No, Uly, I didn't realize the image in your post is generated by AI. It doesn't look eerie to me, so my opinion in this post may be slightly biased. I'm cautious about new technology.
Thank you for thinking I look that flawless in real life! π
@CocoPop Good material in, good results from AI π
You're sweet! π
@CocoPop oh yeah, when you sent me that pic, I just thought it was just overprocessed in Photoshop because it was way too smooth. I didn't think it was generated.
Some image generators do make good results, as for others... Sometimes I look at the image in a Telegram channel and think, "Did they even look at what they're posting? It's so ugly!" Especially with fingers, for some reason AI can't make hands look natural, it's a mess. Also, with any writings, it just produces nonsense that barely resembles letters.
I kinda liked one chinese service where you can upload a photo of a person, and it generates an image with anime style; it was funny. Although it barely resembled original person.
@BalaGi Yeah, it was an AI portrait generator. I fed it one picture of myself and it spat out like 15 beautiful portraits in different outfits, haircuts... even as a Roman gladiator! And the funny thing is that they were all exactly what I looked like in my 20s and 30s, even though the picture I gave it was in my 50s. That's scary!
@BalaGi I believe the images my coworkers use are not based on any sources, such as a genuine person's photo or something similar. That's because of portrait rights issues, I think. Maybe that's one of the reasons I feel something strange. AI's evolution is really fast, so it may be able to generate real hand's images as well this year.
@CocoPop I assumed you're actually wearing a cowboy hat on a daily basis!
@Akiko I practically do β that part isn't a stretch.
@CocoPop Sometimes I can't tell if a native speaker is joking or being serious, but all right, this time I believe this to be true π€
@Akiko When I'm joking, I almost always use emojis. In this case, I'm being serious. I do wear a cowboy hat most of the time.
@CocoPop Okay, I'll remember that. Anyway, it looks great on you!
β hank you))
