Ehrenfest would firmly align on the side of these new insights, but even if he didn't oppose--as his friend Einstein did--the revolutionary principles Bohr, Heisenberg, Dirac and Born were bringing along, he just couldn't, however, get rid of the feeling that a fundamental limit had been trespassed. He felt that a demon, perhaps a genie, had made its nest in the soul of physics--a genie no member of his own generation would ever be capable of returning to its bottle. Once the new rules that govern the inner realm of atoms were accepted, the whole world would lose the reality and staunchness it had before.
