She wasn't a hopeless case, but she did have a nasty habit of getting into trouble, however ordinary the situation she was in. The hard knocks of life had almost, but not entirely, eliminated it. But she could still manage to get out of trouble on her own. However difficult it might seem, she wouldn't give up easily—a rare quality in a woman who couldn't possibly find a purpose in life. But now is not the time to share this memory. I certainly couldn't go into the more sordid details, but I do know more than I wanted to. And how she survived, however, or how much luck had to do with it, is something I shouldn't even mention.
