I Have a Love-Hate Relationship With Snow

A snowy landscape is beautiful, but I'm curious as to why we find it beautiful despite the fact that a snowy environment can be life-threatening. If our feelings are the result of evolution, why do we find such a severe environment beautiful?

I was born and raised in Toyama, which has a lot of snow, and then moved to Tokyo for 23 years before returning to Toyama. When I lived in Tokyo, I never felt like winter ever truly arrived. Autumn turned into spring in Tokyo.

It's not cold enough yet, so even when it snows, it doesn't pile up. It starts to pile up in large quantities around Christmas when the ground and air get sufficiently cold. And then, the world turns entirely white. We can't tell where the sun is. It shines through the thick clouds and illuminates the world indirectly. The sounds are absorbed by snow, so they become ambiguous as well.

I feel that it's beautiful every year, but I'm also tired of how harsh winter is. I really have a love-hate relationship with snow.
