I had never thought about how manufacturers get the down for their down jackets. It hit me when I was telling my language exchange friend what a down jacket was. At first, I guessed that they collect down that has been shed. But I was not sure if they could get enough down. So, I googled it and read some articles. According to them, the down comes only from geese and ducks raised and killed for meat and plucked after slaughter. We compared wool to down. We shear wool from sheep every year, but shearing their wool also benefits the sheep. Then we changed the subject.

After our conversation, I reread these articles carefully and found that a lot of geese and ducks can have their feathers plucked while alive, repeatedly for years. I was shocked to learn this. I also found good news: some popular companies are supporting the Responsible Down Standard (RDS) to protect and enhance the welfare of geese and ducks.

羊から毎年羊毛を刈り取っているけれど、それは羊のためにもなっています。その後話題を変えました。

会話が終わってから、記事を注意深く読み直して、気づきました。たくさんのガチョウやアヒルが

生きたまま毎年くり返し、毛をむしり取られている可能性があるということに。大変ショックでした。

いいニュースもありました。何社かの有名企業がRDSをサポートしているそうです。
