I spent most of my time trying to find the name of a certain metal part while writing my post last night. Have you had a similar experience? First of all, I didn't know the name in Japanese. So, I looked it up online. I found 鍵ベロ(a tongue of the key), but it didn't seem to be a popular word. There were a few search results on the screen. I switched the search results to in pictures and typed in "key tongue". Pictures of magnetic tongue key holders appeared. That was not what I was looking for. Deadbolts, latch bolts, levers, locking irons, all were not the one.

To tell the truth, I found the name, tongue for quarter-turn lock while writing this post. I noticed that the Japanese word, 鍵, means both a key and a lock. I couldn't find the name because I was looking for a key instead of a lock.

昨夜、投稿を書くのに、ほとんどの時間をある金属部品の名前を探すのに費やしました。みなさんは同じような経験がありますか。そもそも、日本語でもその名前を知りませんでしたので、ネットで調べました。「鍵ベロ」という名前を見つけましたが、あまり一般的ではないようでした。検索結果が少ししか表示されなかったのです。検索結果表示を画像に切り替えて、"key tongue"と入力しました。舌を模した、マグネット式の鍵掛けの画像が表示されました。これは探しているものではありません。deadbolts、latch bolts、locking irons、どれもそれではありませんでした。

実を言うと、これを書いている途中に見つけてしまったのです。その名は "tongue for quarter-turn lock"。日本語の鍵という言葉は、英語の key と lock の両方の意味があるのに気がつきました。lock ではなく、key で探していたから見つけられなかったのでした。
