The Messiest Language Learner

Congrats to Robin on announcing Journaly officially!

I wanted to come here and write about my language learning journey, and how completely all over the place it’s been. I’m a native English speaker from Austin, Texas. I began learning Spanish, French, and Latin in high school and immediately had to become the star pupil, lol. I would spend hours every day memorizing sentences, vocabulary, and forcing foreign exchange students to speak with me. I kind of dropped them all once I graduated high school, but I kept my passion for French with me.

That was about 8 years ago. I have some years where I make amazing progress with French, and some years of complete decay and decline. It’s always fun, always fresh, for me to begin again and start making headway. I’m at a point where I can comfortably listen to the radio, to podcasts, read fluently, and speak abysmally. My progress for the time I have dumped makes no mathematical sense, I should be a master by now. It doesn’t make me upset though, it gives me a chuckle.

I sometimes feel a lot of sudden pressure on myself to take it more seriously and do better, but it passes. I suppose I’m just a casual language lover. Nothing special. And I’m very comfortable with that. Have a great day everyone! -Skyler
