Japan has lots of long-established businesses, and today I'd like to share a documentary about one of them in Kyoto.
Kon-kan Shouten is a family-run business that was founded 270 years ago and still runs its business in the same place where it started. It's been selling a type of woven fabric called kinran, which is made with gold or silver silk threads. Kinran is a type of Nishijin-ori, which is a traditional textile in Kyoto.
The kimono looks breathtaking. The documentary shows us how they make kinran, and I was so impressed by the 13th generation owner's knowledge of colors. Watching it made me think keeping tradition is hard and passing it on will be harder. I truly hope we can keep such tradition as long as we can.
