This photo is what I feel like, reading Vindens Skygge, as a Norwegian language beginner.
Is that a bad thing? I don't think so!
Part of learning a language is not being timid, and being willing to make mistakes, have fun with it, and learn from the process of adventure.
I caught the UK strain of Covid from my youngest daughter three weeks ago, so I didn't hit my pre-bookclub study marks the way I wanted to do.
I have not let that daunt me, though.
I started on Saturday (March 6th), and was able to read the first two paragraphs while only having to look up about five words.
Will I grasp this all the same as if I read it in English, my mother tongue? Absolutely not, and that is part of my plan.
I wanted to challenge myself, and then come back and re-read this in a year, after I've gained much more fluency in Norwegian, and see what nuances I missed from reading literally.
Don't let the level of your target language stop you.
Good advice to other learners, and great visual! Your Norwegian must be much more than "beginning", if you just needed to look up 5 words! I've been studying Spanish since, well, since Covid, and I need to check between 8 - 12 words per page. However, I slogged through literature in French & German in university, so it's not daunting. I may have recourse to an English copy later on, but for now I think I'll persevere en español. I do have the audio book in Spanish, read by an actor with a divine baritone voice...
great attitude
Exactly, language learning is like a self-challenge! Inspiring post, everyone should adopt this attitude when facing a targeted language.
I think it's a great idea to great a book and then go back to it again later: you can get a strong sense of making progress by doing that, and maybe laugh too at the things you completely misunderstood earlier! So there's both learning and laughing in the same package! Good luck!
Tusen takk to everyone for their comments! Wow, has it really been two months since I was here last??? My second Covid shot knocked me for a loop, and then I've been working hard at getting my diversity coaching business up and going. Time to get back on track . . . tenacity wins the race!
