저는 미국인이고 제일 친한 친구는 핀란드 사람이에요. 저희는 Reddit에서 만났어요. 둘 다 케이팝을 좋아해서 케이팝 subreddit에서 서로 댓글을 보다가 제가 먼저 친구에게 메시지를 보냈어요. 제 기억이 맞다면 2022년쯤이었어요. 곧 Discord에서 채팅을 시작했고 지금까지도 매일 메시지를 주고받아요.

2024년에 저는 핀란드로 여행을 가서 친구와 2주 동안 함께 지냈어요. 핀란드뿐만 아니라 스웨덴과 에스토니아에도 갔어요. 그 여행은 제 첫 해외여행이었어요. 주변 사람들은 저와 친구가 온라인으로 만났기 때문에 친구가 나쁜 사람일까 봐 많이 걱정했어요. 영어 표현 중에 "Stranger danger"라는 말이 있어요. 그런 걱정은 이해했지만 저는 친구를 잘 알고 있었고 믿었어요. 그래서 결국 핀란드에 갔고 그 2주는 인생에서 가장 행복한 시간이었어요.

올해는 친구가 미국에 와서 저와 2주 동안 함께 지냈어요. 너무 기뻤어요. 저는 모르는 사람을 조심하는 건 중요하다고 생각하지만 온라인에서도 진정한 친구를 만날 수 있다고 믿어요. 제 핀란드 친구는 제일 친한 친구이고 세상에서 저를 가장 잘 아는 사람이에요.

A friend I met online

I'm American, and my best friend is Finnish. We met through Reddit. We both like K-pop, so we saw each other's comments on a K-pop subreddit and, after some time, I sent them a message. If my memory is right, that was back in 2022. Soon, we started chatting on Discord and talking every day.

In 2024, I flew to Finland and stayed with my friend for 2 weeks. In addition to Finland, we went to Sweden and Estonia, too. That trip was my first time out of the country. Because we met online, people I know were worried my friend might be a bad person. In English, we have the saying "Stranger danger." I understand that, but I knew my friend well and trusted them. So I went and spent the happiest time of my life there.

This year, my friend came and spent 2 weeks with me in the USA. It was such a blissful time. I believe it is good to be cautious with people you don't know, but I also believe it is possible to make a true friend online. My Finnish friend is my best friend and knows me better than anyone else.
