Gyaru (ギャル) is a part of Japanese subculture, which describes young girls' fashion including unique makeup styles and dyed hair. The word gyaru is a Japanese adaptation of the English word girl.

From the 90's to the early 2000s, gyaru culture was very popular, and we used to see girls with very unusual looks everywhere. They wore very heavy makeup and dyed their hair. They also wore a very short skirt and loose knee-high socks in their school uniforms. I used to wonder what their parents thought about their daughters dressing like that. I appreciated that my daughter was too young to wear these fashion. (She was born in 1994.)

I thought gyaru culture had completely died out and had become a thing of the past. I had totally forgotten that history often repeats itself.

Yesterday, I saw some news about gyaru for the first time in years. According to it, the style has become popular again, and there is even a very popular gyaru who is an elementary school student, called Yunachi. When gyaru were popular in the past, most of them were high school students. Now, the new generation of gyaru are much younger, and they are around 10!

You can learn about them here. They even have their own YouTube channel here.

I wonder if their mothers were gyaru when they were in high school. I wouldn't like it if my daughter dressed like that and I'd be stricter to her. I'd never thought gyaru culture was so deeply rooted. What do you think about these girls?
