Who does not remember any special teacher? I could say that everybody has been a schoolchild of a teacher who had a huge impact in their school life. In most cases, it is due to different things beyond the teacher’s knowledge of their subject.
Mostly in the first scholar years, I think teachers should focus on being a patient person while teaching, since they will have to deal with lots of children, who will not behave the same way.
Teaching any subject in a friendly and natural way will always be better than explaining anything to the students without sympathy. For that, developing a good friendliness with the people in class will help any teacher.
Moreover, I think teachers should spend more time with their students away from the school. Most meaningful relationships between teachers and students are caused by spending time beyond the classroom.
To sum up, despite the fact that being an expert in the subject you teach is always important, teachers should be aware of their social skills with the students.

Some good points. You might want to be a bit more specific about the context of teachers spending time with students "away from the school". It's true, I found that I got to know my students well, and quickly, on organized school trips. But the unfortunate reality nowadays is that time outside of the classroom is becoming highly structured and monitored.
