Some nights when I struggle to fall asleep, I love going on Youtube and watching videos where people are basically handcrafting some random stuff. Whether itâs furniture, engines or even usless / weird objects... it doesn't really matter in fact. What I enjoy is the process (the "journey"). Going from a raw matirial and ending with something beautiful and refine has always fascinated me! When it comes to those who are doing so for their own stuff, like building a table or a bed they will utilize themselves, Iâm even more impressed! I can actually watch video after video for hours without getting bored or paying attention to the time, given how much this very type of content attracts me.
Whatâs amazing, is that even though I don't have a huge experience (to not say any) related to building things from scratch or even fixing stuff that are broken, still that every time I come across one of this video, I feel confident and have no doubt about my ability to do it myself. Indeed, I have been following a Canadian couple who are converting their van to a house on wheels in order to live in the road and travel the world (hopefully soon đ). They are sharing their day to day progression on the project and most of the time, they learn about how to achieve a given task they have to do, jsut the day before, simply by watching one or two tutorials on Youtube.
You might be skeptical, however it makes sense for me given that today we have access to limitless sources of knowledge. We are few clicks away from a professional who kindly shows us how to do X, Y and Z. Moreover, the matirials also have improved a lot with time. Today, they are easier to handle and work with. Itâs as if they have been made especialy for beginners with zero experiences. Just like the materials, the tools have here again evolved so much! Today, the gears and devices wich used to be designed for professionals only are accessable for everyone out there.
That why I really feel ready to take the plunge and at least try something, to see if I genuinely like that or if it is only a temporary trend which would eventually fade away by itself (it happens to me very often to be frank). I think that for my first shot, I will go with a table I want to create. I have seen a huge number of videos and I feel like I can do it. It would be a pretty large table made out of wood, with metal legs. Most importantly, it would be a familly table wich we would use to have diners and gathering. That is what really motivates me to undertake this ambitious project.
The most important thing to keep in mind, is to be well equipped! That the main rule that came out again and again in the videos I saw. I have spoken about raw materials and tools just above, and the most important thing is to alway go for the premium choice! If you choose to go with afoardable stuff, odds are that you will find yourself oblige to substitute them once they broke. Eventually, you will pay the same money or even more than if you had bought the good ones at first! As my mom always says "Iâm not that rich to buy cheap things".
Thatâs it for todayâs essay. I will definitely keep you posted if Idecide to finally jump right into it đ
In Sweden we have a whole school subject called "slöjd" for the students between the ages of 9-15. There are two types of slöjd, the "wood-slöjd" and the "sewing/textile-slöjd" you can choose from. In the lessons you creake/craft/make stuff yourself, like pillows cases, stuffed animals, clothes, easier furniture, and lots of other stuff! Its pretty fun and you can really be creative and make usefull things with your own hands. And you have very nice homemade christmas gifts to give your parents/grandparens if you want :)
@Chocolate_Frop Wow! đ Itâs well known that scandinavians are super advanced when it comes to education. Still, the information you gave me literally blew my mind! It seems to be so cool!
