Nowadays, more and more people choose to live in big cities, and cosmopolitan cities are expanding all the time. Although cities are very vibrant and attractive places to live, there are many social problems affecting cities. This essay will examine some of these problems in detail and then propose some solutions.
One of the biggest problems of living in big cities is that overcrowding is inevitable as many people dwell in these cities. And this leads to the lack of resources and spaces for people. To solve this problem, governments should encourage people to move out of the city center by introducing profitable and attractive opportunities in the countryside or rural areas. For example, the laws encouraging farming and funding farmers and entrepreneurs should be enacted by governments.
Another issue is traffic and air pollution. As cities are full of vehicles, there is a great deal of traffic jam. This problem is causing air pollution because the vehicles are releasing exhaust and, as a result, many people are suffering from respiratory diseases, such as asthma. This problem could be addressed by imposing a fine for cars entering the city centers and promoting public transportation use, and building more bike schemes around the city.
Finally, another problem is that the general cost of living is too high. Take housing costs as an example. The high property prices are out of reach for many people on the average salary. So those who could not afford to buy a new house choose to rent a house outside the city, and they are forced to commute to work. The public transportation costs are prohibitively expensive for many people as well. The way forward must be to invest more money in building affordable housing to allow people to move to these houses and reduce transportation costs for citizens to travel cheaply.
To sum up, although it is clear that cities face a range of problems, it is undoubtedly possible to tackle these issues and improve the quality of life in cities. Governments and municipalities should take the lead in dealing with these problems; otherwise, city life will only get worse in the future.
Extremely well written, and an interesting read.
