Hello everyone ! I recently made an entry here on Journaly about my first experience reading classical Russian literature in a foreign language. More specifically, about reading Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoyevsky in English. It's not my first book in English, by the way; I've read some chapters of Sherlock Holmes, but I haven't finished it (I think I'm on the fifth chapter).
I decided to buy an English book last week, and my choice was the great Russian classic called Crime and Punishment. I chose this book because I'm passionate about Russian culture and I wanted to start my reading of the classics in style. Even though I'm studying Russian, my conception of studying the language is far from be able to read literature classics of that extremely difficult language. But for a while, I'm happy to be able to write some basic things in Russian, and also to be able to read that book in English. I bought the book and now I'm reading the fifth chapter. It's more difficult than I imagined, but I'm able to understand almost everything in the proper context . Dostoyevsky did a really good job by writing that book. I'm the beginning of Crime and Punishment, and nothing amazing has happend so far. Even though, I'm still excited about reading it. It's almost like: oh God, after so much effort, I'm really reading it.
I just wanted to share my progress in reading the book, and that's the second entry about it. The first one was written in Russian, so if you speak Russian, please check it out !
Have you read Crime and Punishment ?
I never have read it, but the post makes it sound interesting
I read this many years ago in my high school English class. You have not chosen an easy book to read! But it sounds like you are truly motivated to read something by a Russian author, so I'm sure that you will be successful.
