Stray dogs

In Brazil is pretty common to see stray dogs everywhere you go. The Brazilian government estimates that there are 62 million dogs in the country, with 35% living on the streets or in shelters.

I live in a city of 70,000 people, where stray dogs are a normal part of society. People put water bowls and dog food on the sidewalks to feed them. In winter, they set up some cardboard boxes for shelter and even put some clothes on them (it's kind of funny to see stray dogs using clothes). In summer, these dogs like to lie down at the door of stores that keep the AC on. Costumers need to watch their step or jump over two or three deeply sleeping dogs, just to get into the store.

Another thing that is pretty common is dog attacks, specially people in motorcycles get bitten quite often. Almost every time I go cycling, I get chased by at least one dog (some dogs are very persistent and can follow you for 100 yards barking like crazy).

Sometimes, cities try to capture the more aggressive dogs or castrate them, but there are never enough shelters or founds to care for them.
