Today's topic: "A week without technology"
Today, I want to practice writing about technology. As far as I know, technology is very important in everyone's life. So important, to the point that it seems almost impossible to live a day without the presence of technology. It's everywhere: at home, at work, at school, in the streets, at the hospital, at the doctor, in the means of transportation... Everywhere we go, we're surrounded with technology.
A week without technology is something I've never tried yet, but I've tried a day without it to prepare a small essay about technology. I was assigned with that topic, a little bit difference than the one I'm writing about : "No tech Day" In other words, a day with no technology. I'll tell you what I remember about my essay, but also the experiences I gained through that one day.
It was during summertime. I remember waking up in the morning, ready to challenge myself to write that essay and see what are the pros and cons of a "No tech Day" The first thing that I've noticed was how automatic it is for people to wake up, check their phone and scroll through their feed. The tentation was strong, but I purposely turned my phone off the night before to not ruin my efforts. Instead, I asked my mother for the time. Habits was hard to deal with and I was tempted to use my phone out of habits. When I went outside to buy some bread, I even thought I had lost my phone for a minute because I had a habit of putting it in the back of my jeans pocket. When I looked for it, it wasn't there and I panicked but then remembered that I was not authorized to use it for 24H.i was relieved when I remembered my assignment. I went home, but I was bored as hell so I had to use my imagination and see what I could do to kill time. The only thought that crossed my mind was "I have to go out"
I went for a walk, but I also had a habit of listening to music while walking. It was weird at first because I loved listening to music for It's relaxing and you feel like you're in another world when you have your headphones on. It was boring after 20 minutes, but I got used to it. I spent my time trying to find ways not being involved with any devices. I walked to the library and read for some time. I stayed there for quite a long time then I went over to my friend. We went outside for a walk, but this time, I wasn't alone. Strangely, time passed faster in good company. We were talking and chatting about our life then we bought ice creams. We then went to my house and we played cards. My mother who knew what kind of essay I had to work on asked us if we wanted to go to the amusement park. We both, my friend and I, were excited. It's been a long time since we went there. We screamed out of happiness. My mother called my friend's mother to ask por permission and she said yes.
As we headed there, time flew so fast. My mother played along and made it even more amusing. After that, we went to Mcdonald and ate together. We had so much fun together. After eating, we brought my friend back to her home. There was still time to kill so I thought about what I could do. My parents were of great help as they told me to help with some stuff. We tidied the storage room for a while and found old memories of ours in album photos. We sat on the ground and looked at them. Nostalgia could be read all over our faces as we turned the pages one by one while reminiscing the good old days. After that, I went to my room and wanted to watch a movie, but it was not yet midnight and I had to wait till the next day before I could go back to technology. I took a piece of paper and drew a little bit then I rememberd that I had to write about my day.
I wrote everything, the good and the bad things of a "No tech day" in a small list then I started to write my essay.
Pros | Cons |
-Quality time with your family -Outdoor activities(going out more) -Using one's ordination to kill boredom -Fighting against laziness and according turning into a couch potato -Less distractions, more actions. -Connecting with people in real time | -Feeling bored -Not being able to can your people if you need them -Not being able to search for an information using the internet |
In conclusion, although I didn't go for an entire week without using any forms of technology, I remember how it felt back then with no access to it for 24H. In my opinion, living with no technology would've been possible if our current lifestyle didn't mostly depend on technology. Nowadays, technology has become quite mandatory in everything that it makes it almost impossible to avoid it. It's possible to consume less technology, but difficult to live without it.
