I just started reading the book "Praise of Folly" by Erasmus and in the preface there is a piece o information that caught me by surprise: in 1508 the Dutch philosopher Erasmus of Rotterdam published a book called "Adages", compiling old proverbs from the Greek and Latin languages. One of these proverbs was about Pandora's box. However, in the original text Pandora open a jar and not a box. The book was a best seller and various autors cited these proverb, propagatinting the translation error. This error would be replicated so many times that the "box" is used to this day in multiple languages.
