What are the pros and cons of watching television for children?

by

Living in a technological era, access to TV and the internet has become much easier over the last fifty years, especially for children. Nowadays, it is almost impossible to find a child who has never seen a TV set, as television takes its place in almost every home. But when we think this through, what are the advantages and disadvantages of watching TV for children? If we start to look at the benefits of watching TV, we have to admit that, sometimes it is a very helpful and didactic tool in terms of educating kids with the educational channels and imaginative visuals. What I mean by this is that learning through watching TV attracts children more often than not, so if it can be utilized in the right way, that can result in amazing outcomes that might have been seen as impossible at first. Take my 7-year-old niece. She has learned much thanks to TV as she could improve some speaking skills by listening to the characters talking in the Cartoons. The other possible benefit of watching TV is that it can present a colorful and imaginative world to children, by enabling them to enhance their imagination. Turning to the drawbacks of watching television, we should stress the amount of time which is appropriate to be spent in front of the TV, so this responsibility often falls to the parents as they can observe their children closely and keep track of the time their kids have spent with television. Like everything, it is harmful to watch too much television as well. Especially when it comes to children, they may not know which programs to watch and how long. Another possible danger for children while watching TV is that they may encounter some inappropriate shows made for adults and continue to watch without being under supervision. It can do irreparable harm to a child's subconscious and scare them with some frightening scenes. Gathered data presents that children under 8 to 10 age tend to maintain these anxieties acquired in childhood throughout their lives. So these kinds of fears and feelings may put the child's imagination and mental health at risk. As a result, what can be inferred from this essay is that watching television affects children both positively and negatively. I firmly believe that if necessary precautions are taken, a child can watch TV at certain times for a given duration. Because despite the disadvantages, TV shows a child an enormous world and may even educate and help them with their language abilities. However, it is becoming more common that some TV shows are exposing children to intended malevolent scenes. As I said earlier, it is all up to the parents to supervise their child.
